"LIFE BEFORE AND LIFE AFTER"

I, Samir, 19 year old, 12th passed student, belong to a poor family having three brothers and one sister. I did my 12th from commerce side but for that I had to really struggle hard as we used to live in such a colony where the environment was very different. It was basically a slum area where all illegal activities like smack, ganja, alcohol, abusing people and gambling were common and could be seen at every nook and corner. I ‘Balram’, associated with Navjyoti since I was in my primary classes. I completed my primary classes at Navjyoti school which was at Yamuna Pushta. We used to get everything from our school and that was because of the efforts of Dr. Kiran Bedi madam. After my primary education I took admission in a Govt. School where we had to face many difficulties as the teachers never used to teach properly. Navjyoti arranged tution classes for us in the form of remedial education classes. Puneeta (21 year old girl), belonging to a middle class family from Jahangirpuri resettlement colony of three brothers, three sisters and parents. After completing her IXth standard, her father did not allow her to study further. He wanted puneeta to get married as soon as possible. But puneeta was very much interested in further studies and above all wanted to be independent. She came to know about the Jahangirpuri vocational training center through Navjyoti workers who used to do home visits regularly. "How it feels to be Independent"

Sheetal, a 27 year old female, living at Jahangirpuri resettlement colony, CD park since 1998 with her parents and three younger brothers. She is quite an active girl but because of their poor economical condition, she could not study after class Xth. She was just helping her mother in household chores at home. One day a worker from Jahangirpuri Vocational Training Center visited her home and oriented her about the vocational training courses available there. A Journey from Yamuna Pushta

I ‘Roshan Sheikh’, associated with Navjyoti since Yamuna Pushta time as me and my family use to live there. I completed my primary education from Navjyoti School. My parents did not have to worry for my primary education as Navjyoti used to provide us everything from books, copies, uniform, and concession in fees to nutrition in the form of Biscuits, fruits, eggs etc. I did my studies from Navjyoti till Vth std. ‘Neetu’ is 29 year old woman from Jahangirpuri who did six months Beauty Culture course from Navjyoti Vocational Training Centre in the year 2004. She was very shy, introvert and sensitive kind of girl. Being from a low income group family she could not study from a regular and reputed university. She did her schooling and graduation from correspondence. But being intelligent she did not lose hope and found avenues for her earning. "A Story of a brave boy from Yamuna Pushta"

Abdul Kalam, 18 year old boy, eldest of all the siblings including five brothers, three sisters, mother and father in the family from Bihar side. Their family moved to Delhi for work and they were residing at Yamuna Pushta Slums. Abdul was about 8 year old when he came with his family at Yamuna Pushta. Abdul’s father works as a massager in the Meena Bazaar and earns a little bit in this profession. His Mother is a housewife. Being in such a big family it’s difficult to manage food for all...
