NAVJYOTI LIBRARIES :
Libraries at the project sites is one of the vital activities that not only supplement the education but goes a long way in promoting child’s language and reading skills. It’s an effort to set off a life long interest/aptitude in children in reading. A library in Navjyoti is not just any normal library where children come, read, get books issued and leave. It’s a storehouse of a lot of creative activities including picture reading, book reviews, drawing, pasting, creative writing, sight reading, lap reading, story telling, role plays etc. the focus is on reinforcing the sessions learned in the classroom through as interesting ways as possible. News discussion is yet another activity that is of prime significance.
Exposure to these activities gives these children a very unique experience, which they would otherwise have been deprived off. Moreover, when these children get books and take them home, their older siblings also get a chance to read. Colorful and interesting books go a long way in developing interest of children in studies. In-fact, it has been observed that when there is a library period, the attendance in the class goes up considerably.
PROJECT RATIONALE:
1. Easy Accessibility of Books
The organization is reaching out to more than 6000 children through non formal education programs for school going with remedial education, non school going and drop out children with Gali school. Since these children belong to low economic background and cannot afford extra reading material, Navjyoti libraries serves a very important role in providing them with easy access to a wide range of learning material.
2. Inculcating Habit of Reading
Lack of interest in education is one of the main reasons for high drop out rate in the government schools. Through interesting reading material in the library and regular library class which consists of interactive sessions on the books, efforts are made to inculcate reading habit and make learning fun and interesting.
3. Supplementing Education
The books in the library cover a variety of subjects such as languages, story books, activities, science and fiction, social sciences etc along with academic ones to supplement their education.
4. Means of Sensitizing
The project area is though a resettlement colony but the conditions are no better than slums. Books can act as an added medium to convey the message of upliftment of their life styles and strengthening values. Since we aim at preventing child labour, the issuance of books to read in spare time would leave children with no time to indulge into any such thing.
5. Strengthening Education
The lessons taught and interactive sessions taken in the library class have a compounded effect when the children get to read the same topic in the books.
6. Creating a Sense of Responsibility
The concept of returning the books in the same condition as it is issued to the children will inculcate in them a habit of responsibility and accountability
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
- To supplement the academic education
- To inculcate the habit of reading in children
- To give them exposure to various other avenues of learning

- For Slow readers: For slow readers Librarians use books to show pictures and a copy of same book is given to them so that they can themselves read the story or poems etc., thus using the practical way of teaching.
- For Fluent readers: To fluent readers simply books are issued and they are asked to ask question related to story or poems etc.
