JAHANGIRPURI RESETTLEMENT COLONY:

AREA PROFILE
Jahangir puri is Asia’s biggest re-settlement colony situated near Azad Pur vegetable market, which is Asia’s largest vegetable market, with a population of about 5 lakh. The location of the project is an area where the majority of people are illiterate. The male-to-female ratio is below the national average and is estimated to be 830 females’ per1000 males. Most of the population is migrant in nature. The excessive population and housing shortage has resulted in more inadequacies and inconveniences.

Jahangir Puri is characterized by various problems and shortcomings found in a typical low-income resettlement colony and slum. The existing Primary Education status of the children is very poor. Moreover, insensitive parents, non-co-operative attitude of teachers, cultural taboos have further aggravated the problem. The primary education status of girls is worst. They are involved in the domestic chores and are generally never encouraged to go to schools confidence and courage to face their households and community problems.

The abuse of the women is rampant in the area. Their financial dependence on the men has led to their inability to have a say in the childbirth. The area has a very high rate of illiteracy especially amongst its women. Parents do not give priority to educate their children especially the girl child.
