HOLAMBIKALAN RESETTLEMENT COLONY:

AREA PROFILE
Holambi Kalan resettlement Colony is divided into two phases with inhabitants mostly from ITO, Yamuna Pushta, Bapu Dham etc. Both the parts are divided into three blocks A, B and C. As per the data available through MCD the total population is 33,476. Child population is 17,660 and males are 8476 and females are 7340.

Educational Facilities at Holambi Kalan : - There are 3 Primary schools ( classe I to V) run by MCD, two in C Block and 1 in A block, there are 2 Government CO-Ed Secondary school one in each of A and B Block with classes from VI to X std. There is one private primary school as well from Nursery to V std. Mid day meals are provided in these school.

The teachers-pupil ratio varies from 1 teacher per 100 students to 1 to 60. In one Govt Co-ed secondary school there is a total of 6 teachers for 400 (250 boys and 150 girls) students, in another there are 14 teachers for 1200 (700 boys and 500 girls) children. Male - Female Teachers ratio is on an average 2:1.

Owing to limited number of teachers and overcrowding, low retention and high drop out is a regular feature in these schools. Most of the teachers in these schools are abusive using corporal punishment as the only way to control students, they often use abusive language, because of which many students remain absent or they simply drop out of school to get away from the humiliation. Due to high unemployment rate and low literacy level within the community, the parents of these children are in no condition to help their children in studies, as they are uneducated and most of the times are busy struggling for their survival. The children at this age need specific guidance as to which vocation has to be chosen with respect to their skills and competencies. The perception of the community people is also reflected in the gender difference in access and levels of education. The girls are only encouraged enough to just complete their primary schooling after that no efforts are made to educate them. Also, because of Co-education set up many parents do not prefer to send the girls to school. Efforts are required to change this attitude and perception of the community, and eradicate the gender differences.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and introduction of mid day meals has managed to increase the enrollment numbers in the area, however many students do not have the skills needed to earn higher incomes as they are functionally illiterate. Gali schools of Navjyoti running in the area has been able to prepare the children for getting admission into regular schools, however in order to reduce drop out, and improve the retention levels, there is a great need to run remedial education intervention that helps in bridging the gap for these students, motivate them to complete their schooling, encourage community to build a favourable environment for education for both girls and boys and strengthen the government system of education.
