"I, Samir, 19 year old, 12th passed student, belong to a poor family having three brothers and one sister. I did my 12th from commerce side but for that I had to really struggle hard as we used to live in such a colony where the environment was very different. It was basically a slum area where all illegal activities like smack, ganja, alcohol, abusing people and gambling were common and could be seen at every nook and corner. I used to avoid those things and completed my studies till 12th. I would not have been able to complete my studies without the help of Navjyoti's remedial teachers. But two major incidents happened in our life. My father got expired and one notice came from the Government which talked about demolition of Yamuna Pushta slums. We were helpless. We were thrown to a corner place in north-west of Delhi (Bawana) where the life was worst than before. There was a jungle all around us with no electricity, water supply and place to live. Navjyoti also moved with us and helped us in settling over there. The Government did not allowed us to construct for the initial three months and we had no choice but to live in small shanties. When we came to Bawana, admissions for 11th class had already started by that time and I had no money to take admission. Somehow, my elder brother managed money for my admission. For tution classes, I joined Navjyoti's remedial education programme. It saved the future of many other children like me. Remedial Teachers helped us in overcoming our weakness in subjects like Maths, Science, English and Social Science. They built our base in basic concepts related to subjects. Now I have completed my 12th std. with good marks and have enrolled myself in the B.Com (Hons.) first year at Khalsa College. I want to continue with my study further and plan to do some part time job. Even after my studies our teachers visit our homes and help us in every manner they can with an aim to make our future bright. I will never forget my teacher's efforts in shaping my personality and last but not the least the organization 'Navjyoti' behind this cause. Samir Ex-remedial Student Bawana " by: Samir |
